World News - China's first emperor ordered a search for elixir of life China's first emperor - creator of the world-famous terracotta army - was on a quest for eternal life, new archaeological research has revealed.A set of wooden slips found in the central province of Hunan contain an executive order from emperor Qin Shihuang for a nationwide search for the elixir of life, along with replies from local governments, according to Xinhua news agency on Sunday. It cited Zhang Chunlong, a researcher at the provincial institute of archaeology, as saying the emperor's decree reached even frontier regions and remote villages.Qin Shihuang's obsession with eternal life was well-known: He was responsible for the massive underground mausoleum in the northern province of Shaanxi filled with nearly 8,000 terracotta soldiers built to protect him in the afterlife.By studying the 36,000 wooden slips - found in 2002 at the bottom of a well in Hunan - archaeologists have uncovered not only the imperial order to find an 'elixir of life', but also the often embarrassed responses from local authorities who struggled to meet his demands.According to Xinhua, a village called 'Duxiang' reported to the emperor that it had failed to discover a miraculous potion, but that the search was continuing.Another place, 'Langya', suggested that 'an herb collected from an auspicious local mountain' might do the job.The texts were written on a series of wooden slats originally connected to each other by strings. This technique was the most common medium of writing in China before the appearance of paper at the beginning of the first millennium AD.Qin Shihuang's search for immortality was doomed to failure: He died in 210 BC after reigning for 11 years.His 8,000-man terracotta army, crafted around 250 BC for the emperor's tomb, is a UNESCO world heritage site. The site a major tourist draw and a symbol of ancient Chinese artistic and military sophistication in a country that proclaims itself a 5,000-year-old civilisation. As emperor, he added, Qin Shihuang 'not only innovated the terracotta warriors, he also created a series of innovations' including standardised weights and measures, national roads, and a unified currency.Following Qin Shihuan's death, the Qin dynasty - notorious for its book burnings and executions of literati - laid the foundation for China as a unified nation that has persisted for two millennia. The Terracotta Army is a form of funerary art buried with the First Emperor in 210 to 209 BC and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife. Arguably the most famous archaeological site in the world, it was discovered by chance by villagers in 1974, and excavation has been on-going at the site since that date. An extraordinary feat of mass-production, each figure was given an individual personality although they were not intended to be portraits. The figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals. Current estimates are that there were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 c Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5211373/An-order-Chinese-emperor-immortality.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

World News - Search ends for three U.S. sailors who went missing A search ended Friday for three sailors missing in the Philippine Sea since a U.S. Navy aircraft crashed two days earlier, the navy said. The C-2A 'Greyhound' transport aircraft was traveling to the USS Ronald Reagan when it crashed with eleven men on board.Eight people were rescued quickly and are in good condition, but Japanese and U.S. ships and aircraft had continued searching for the others. The Navy's 7th Fleet said details of the three missing sailors were being withheld pending completion of notification of next of kin procedures.'Our thoughts and prayers are with our lost shipmates and their families,' said Rear Adm. Marc Dalton.'As difficult as this is, we are thankful for the rapid and effective response that led to the rescue of eight of our shipmates, and I appreciate the professionalism and dedication shown by all who participated in the search efforts.'The twin-propeller plane crashed about 500 nautical miles (925 kilometers) southeast of Okinawa while bringing passengers and cargo from Japan to the aircraft carrier. The Reagan was participating in a joint exercise with Japan's navy when the plane crashed. The carrier was leading the search and rescue efforts along with Japan's naval forces. The Navy describes the Nov. 16-26 joint exercise in waters off Okinawa as the 'premier training event' between the U.S. and Japanese navies, designed to increase defensive readiness and interoperability in air and sea operations. The Japan-based 7th Fleet has had two fatal naval accidents in Asian waters this year, leaving 17 sailors dead and prompting the removal of eight top Navy officers from their posts, including the 7th Fleet commander. The USS John S. McCain and an oil tanker collided near Singapore in August, leaving 10 U.S. sailors dead. Seven sailors died in June when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship collided off Japan. The Navy has concluded the collisions were avoidable and recommended changes including improved training and increasing sleep and stress management for sailors. The Fitzgerald left its home port in Yokosuka, Japan, on Friday to begin its journey to Pascagoula, Mississippi, for more repairs, the Navy said in a separate statement. It said a heavy lift transport vessel, the Transshelf, will meet the Fitzgerald in deep water to begin lifting it to bring it back to the U.S.Initial repairs to the Fitzgerald's hull and other structures were done in a dry dock at Yokosuka before she returned to the water for return to the U.S. for final repairs, the statement said. World News - MH370 search stopped so ship could 'refuel' in Australia The ship hired to search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which mysteriously disappeared for three days was reportedly 'refueling' in Australia. The Seabed Constructor turned off its transponder in the Indian Ocean, prompting speculation that crew had found the plane's wreckage but wanted to be sure of payment before revealing it to the Malaysian government.'There is nothing to be worried about. We urge family members not to listen to rumours or fake news,' Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai told AFP.The Transport Minister said the search would continue 'as planned'.The ship docked south of Perth on Thursday after its brief disappearance and came back online Tuesday. The Seabed Constructor's Texas-based operator, Ocean Infinity, refused to explain the blackout at the time. The company only said the ship will be docked for a short time before continuing the search. It comes after a leading aviation expert predicted a disaster like MH370 will happen again soon.David Stupples, a professor of electronic and radio systems at City, University of London, said: 'You can't say MH370 won't ever happen again, because it will.'He was referring to the fact that international requirements for new planes to broadcast their locations every minute don't come in until 2021.'Until 2040 or 2050, there's going to be a large number of aircraft flying around that don't have that tracking system fitted,' he said.Currently some airlines including Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Qantas Airways and Qatar Airways track planes every 15 minutes, which will become a requirement this November. But still a jet travelling at 575mph that has been missing for 15 minutes requires a search zone of 170,000 square kilometers - an area the size of Florida. This makes finding any survivors very unlikely.MH370 vanished en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur on March 8, 2014 with 239 people on board. It disappeared after its aircraft communications, addressing and reporting system (Acars) was switched off less than an hour after taking off.On 2 January, The Constructor left the Port of Durban to begin its search on a 'no find, no fee' deal.It planned to use sonar scanning equipment to find the aircraft, after a failed multinational search cost Australian, Malaysian and Chinese authorities $200million.The Malaysian Government will pay US company Ocean Infinity more than $55million if it finds the plane within 90 days. The freelance boat's designated search area was located just outside the 120 square kilometres previously scoured along the 7th Arc - the zone aviation specialists say is most likely to be where MH370's fuel reserves were exhausted. No sign of the plane was found and an Australian-led hunt - the largest in aviation history - was called off in January last year. The Constructor is not the first to comb over this patch of ocean.Fugro Equator, Fugro Discovery and Havila Harmony have all attempted to find the presumably downed plane.Only three confirmed fragments o Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5370249/MH370-search-stopped-ship-refuel-Australia.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490
